A Very DC Weekend with Haley!

Soundtrack for today, and eternal soundtrack for Georgetown

That derby party post must have really taken it out of me, as it’s been radio silence around here ever since. But my bestie Haley came to town this weekend, so obviously I started this week refreshed! This DC weekend made me feel like I was on a genuine vacation, even though I’m told I actually live here now. I’m categorizing it as “travel,” and no one is going to stop me. Haley and I usually do city weekends with a heavy emphasis on brunch and the arts, and this one was no different.

Friday night was a late night of catching up at home, so we slept in a little bit Saturday morning before rolling through the Penn Quarter to Oyamel for some huevos rancheros. I have never given a shout-out to the Penn Quarter, but look for that soon, as it’s one of my favorite areas of the city (probably for its abundance of theaters and Shake Shack: hi New York!). 05.17.16 (Haley Here)-2

Don’t know what’s up with my hair here, but the proper authorities have been contacted.

I know this is controversial, considering Jose Andres’s anointed status in this city, but we were a bit underwhelmed. It was probably because the hostess forgot about us while we were at the bar, and also, we really should have had the ceviche (which is out of this world at China Chilcano). But it was a good start to the day nonetheless, and I won’t give up on the bitches who brunch just yet.

Next, we popped over to the Hirshorn (not pictured above) and got our contemporary art on. There was a really cool exhibition on the digitization of human life downstairs with many avant-garde videos. I was into it.

But upstairs was the most amazing doodle anyone has ever drawn, and it was all over the walls of the entire interior rotunda. (Haley would describe this more eloquently.) Apparently Linn Meyers covered more than 400 linear feet with this masterpiece, hand-drawn with basically a Sharpie. Props for her patience. I think my favorite exhibition was Robert Irwin’s works, though.

Then it was raining, so we cabbed it directly to The Renwick Gallery to see what all the cool kids have been talking about. The “Wonder” exhibition really had me giddy. This rainbow work is made up entirely of tiny colorful threads strung from the floor to the ceiling. And in real life, it sparkles.

It’s called “Plexus A1” by Gabriel Dawe.

The “Wonder” exhibition is all about larger-than-life interactive art, and it’s also kind of like an adult playground. There was an entire room full of huts made from individually selected branches twisted with into their natural arc. (“Shindig” by Patrick Dougherty.)

You know how I love colorful, sparkly things, and there was no shortage of that, so I was mesmerized.

Thankfully it finally stopped raining, so we strolled by the White House and played “where’s the sniper?” which is my new favorite tourist game.

Love!

After a stroll through Farragut, we went home to regroup, take Pippa to the dog park, never make it back out, and end up eating sushi in Shirlington for dinner instead. 🙂

Sunday morning we had to hit Georgetown, of course. We had a great Austrian brunch (of croque madames, so I guess ours was French) at Leopold’s Kafe and strolled the waterfront.

It was finally a beautiful day for wandering Georgetown, and we took full advantage!

Here we are in heaven!

Finally, we ended our day with some shopping until Haley had to run, and I think this Kate Spade flagship is one of my very favorites.

This is the dressing room area decor. So retro!

It was a Sunday done right: bookstores, boats, and brunch.

We both agreed the weekend was way too short. There will have to be more adventures of Catherine and Haley soon! Signature
