Brunching in a Black Watch Blazer

Black Watch Blazer // Oxford Shirt // Skirt (old, similar) // Boots (L.L. Bean clearance rack: similar) // Glasses

It was so good to get to spend time with my cousin James and his girlfriend, Taylor, while I was in Houston last weekend! Haley and I went over to see James’s gorgeous new house on Friday night, and then on Sunday we met for brunch at Tiny Boxwoods for the best chocolate chip cookies ever (and also some other food) where I debuted this black watch blazer I’ve been dying to wear.

Taylor is the style behind Hello Harper, and it was so fun to hear all about life running a boutique. You should definitely check out her adorable, affordable stuff! Wouldn’t this romper be cute with tights and tassel earrings this time of year?

Taylor was wearing this darling blanket scarf, naturally from Hello Harper.

Tiny Boxwoods is a delicious brunch and event space right next door to a nursery, which obviously works out really well for their boxwood aesthetic. And it can’t hurt the nursery either, since we had to check out the flowers! We waited in line for a while, but once you get up to the counter to order, there’s a seat for you, so it works out.

Brunch was delicious, but their chocolate chip cookies were obviously the star of the show. I don’t know how they make them that good, but word is they are opening a new cookies-only location in Houston, so if you are in the area, look out for that!

Obviously we had to do a little outfit shoot after brunch, and James was a very good sport. Truth be told, next time I would wear this outfit with high-heeled boots, but I didn’t want to wear them on the plane, and lord knows you can’t bring more than one pair of boots on a weekend trip in a carry-on. Life.

Isn’t this black watch blazer just wonderful for November? I love that it’s warm and festive enough for brunch or Thanksgiving with your family, but professional enough for work, meeting for coffee, etc. Also, this is not real life (I wish), but you would fit right in horseback or on the clays course at the Greenbrier in this thing. Right?? This blazer can do it all!

I’m really into more sheer black tights these days, especially with a heavy outfit like this. Dare I say I may even prefer the way hose look? I think it is important to contrast the textures so your legs don’t just blend right into your skirt. FYI, you can get high-quality and affordable black tights and hose here (and they’re reorderable!).

It’s really no secret that I’m obsessed with anything plaid from the months of October through February. Maybe it is my Scottish heritage (or just my trip to Scotland more likely), but when I saw this black watch blazer at L.L.Bean, I knew it was for me. Apparently according to the website you can fold this collar over for a more classic look, so I will have to experiment with that next time. Another obvious benefit is, of course, the fact that you can wear this thing now through age 90 and it would still look just as timeless.

Haley wore her gorgeous suede jacket we bought together at Comptoir des Cotonniers during our successive New York years where one of us lived in New York at all times so the other one had a place to stay when she visited. (Let’s go back to that, shall we?!) We did a lot of Comptoir browsing during those years.

And finally, we can’t leave James out. His St. Louis Cardinals golf shirt was right on point.

Check out my other plaid looks in a cape (here) to a classic fall button-down (here).
