A Fall Excursion in a Draper James Cape

Happy Monday! It’s back to reality for me after the most fruitful weekend 3 miles into the woods of the Shenandoahs with some of our best friends, ice cream after every meal, and the most bucolic country scenery possible. But more on that later this week. Today I want to talk about this gorgeous Draper James cape.

I think for a long time I thought capes were kind of a mom thing. But plaid is my favorite thing about cold-weather clothes, and being the anglophile I am, I’m enamored by anything tartan. So I had to try this Scotty check beauty on when we were in Nashville last month. Well call me an old lady, because I love it.  The material is thick but not scratchy, and the inside liner is darling.

This beautiful place I am frolicking around is the Capon Springs and Farms Resort, just over the Virginia/West Virginia border. The resort dates back to the 19th century and is known for it’s healing waters, much like the Greenbrier but far more casual and low-key. My lovely friends Alicia, Amy, and Rachel took most of these photos this weekend, but some are by Will back in the countryside of New York, because I’ve worn this outfit on two trips this fall and I’m not sorry. This is just the best outdoorsy weekend travel outfit for 50-60 degree weather. It’s so comfortable, hides weekend travel food babies, looks so festive for the season, and keeps you warm without being hot. The Draper James cape + fall foliage = love.

The other reason why I love this easy outfit so much that I’ve worn it on our last two weekend trips is that there’s nothing more comfortable than my favorite jeans and these classic Frye harness boots I’ve had since middle school and still love as much as the day my mom bought them. That’s really what my shopping philosophy is all about: building a timeless collection of quality pieces I can mix and match for years to come.

P.S. If you’re looking for something a little less preppy and even more outdoorsy, I also love this other Draper James cape in Georgia plaid.

If it’s still warm where you are, here is a lighter fall look through layering. Also, here’s another fun fall weekend look, and here’s how I styled my other Frye boots.
