Fun Things We Did in Charleston: Sights and Activities

For my final Charleston post, I’m bringing you a few of the fun things there are to do when you’re not shopping or eating! We had a really nice balance of doing as the locals do and also hitting some tourist highlights. One thing that is notably missing from this post is the many plantations there are to tour in the Charleston area. We didn’t have time to fit that in, but I would be remiss not to mention plantation tours in a Charleston activity post. So if you’re planning a trip to Charleston, add “research area plantations” to your list! Anyway, without further ado, here are some of the things we did!

Exploring the Old Village of Mount Pleasant

The Phillipses live in the Old Village of Mount Pleasant, which is a charming, quieter neighborhood on the water with some really historic houses and businesses. Saturday morning we took a tour of the neighborhood and took Sully and the dogs to the park!

Strolling Through Downtown

I think one of the best things to do when you’re in Charleston is just wind your way around downtown through all the narrow alleys and marvel at the beautiful homes! You can see a lot more of the charm of downtown Charleston in this post, but oh my is it a memorable stroll! Make sure you wear comfortable walking shoes (especially if you’re pregnant! Oops.), and make your way down to White Point Garden and the Battery. I have so many pictures of Charleston homes, churches, and parks in my camera! You can spend an entire afternoon and evening on this alone.

Touring Fort Sumter

Of course we couldn’t leave Charleston without visiting a Civil War site! Fort Sumter is on an island all by itself, and learning about it really helped me better understand the origins of the Civil War. It’s amazing it’s still fairly in tact considering all the battles that went on over it!

The ferry ride to the Fort was a pretty fun outing in itself, with great views of downtown Charleston, Sullivan’s Island, and lots of cool old-fashioned sailboats!

We went at the end of the day as the monument was closing, so the guys participated in a flag folding ceremony.

I was 26 weeks here!

Beach Time on Sullivan’s Island

How darling is Sully in this Beaufort Bonnet swim bubble?!

Last, but not least, obviously there are also great beaches in Charleston! We spent an afternoon eating tomato sandwiches on Sullivan’s Island, and it was delightful. Sullivan’s Island has a little restaurant scene of its own, and how fun is it that you can throw in a visit to a separate little beach town when you’re on a Southern city trip?

And that, my friends, concludes my Charleston series!

You can see Erin’s and my downtown photo shoot here.

I rounded up my favorite Charleston shops here.

This is a guide to where to eat!
