Maui No. 3: Walking in Wailea

It’s Travel Tuesday, so we’re back to Maui! Believe it or not, this is actually still seasonally appropriate, since the weather barely ever changes in Maui. In fact, our friends Jeff and Hayley are there right now!

Walking in Wailea

Anyway, I’m documenting our trip slowly but surely by activity or day. We hit the ground running with Lahaina and a gorgeous luau right into a 2am pick-up time and bike ride down a volcano. As I mentioned there, once we hit the beach we had done a full day’s worth of activities, but it was only about 10am. So after another nap on the bus ride back to our hotel from the beach, we decided a low-key beach afternoon was in order.

We had not been to the Wailea area, as it is a little drive from our hotel, so we set out to see it, mostly to see if we might want to stay there for a future trip someday. But first, we stopped in Kihei for the best sushi of our lives at Miso Phat Sushi. The name, website, and space don’t look like much, but that’s how it earned a feature on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. They literally drive out in their boat and catch the fish to serve you that day. Yes, it was $25 a roll, in a strip mall, but we will never forget it. After a comical afternoon wind incident where we had to learn very quickly just how one zips all those little pieces back onto a convertible jeep (which all got zipped up, but not very quickly), we headed down to a public parking lot for a stroll down the Wailea strip.

Hayden Reis Sailcloth Tote // Tuckernuck Hat

Wailea is a manicured little oasis tucked away on the southwest shore of Maui with a sweet little walking path so we could stroll up and down and take in the views. I was so thankful for this huge sailcloth tote, you guys. It was perfect for this trip.  It weighs nothing, you can hose it down, and obviously you can fit everything you need for a day at the beach plus a couple towels in it.

Will also really enjoyed getting some use out of his Patagonia backpack.

I’m just going to go ahead and put it out there that my husband has an unhealthy obsession with PFG shirts. I need to just buy them in every color, but I will never stop hearing about how they are so lightweight, quick-drying, sun-protectant, and cooler than a t-shirt. 🙂 He basically did not take that shirt off this entire trip.

On our drive back, we stopped by this scenic overlook for some views and photos.

To be fair, I’m about as crazy about this hat as Will is about that shirt. It is packable, meaning you can’t mess its shape up, it covers my face from the sun but isn’t too huge, and that bow.

Snorkeling in Kaanapali

This was a different day, but I was trying to lay off the camera and enjoy, so we are consolidating beach time here. On a separate afternoon, we decided to try snorkeling, and rented some gear in Kaanapali. I have never snorkeled before, so I was not very good at keeping that tube thing above water (especially in the crazy waves!), but it was super fun to learn! I never made it to snorkeling around the black rock (where apparently there is a lot more to see), because I was too lazy to walk over there, but now I have basic knowledge for next time!

All the Rainbows

And finally, I will end this post the way every day ended in Maui. With an unbelievable rainbow that just can’t possibly be that bright but was actually way brighter in real life than it shows up in the photos. I swear, this thing just sparkled.
