Transition to Fall in a Drop Waist Dress

I have an announcement to make! I did my own blow out for these photos, and you’re looking at the result! It’s not perfect, but it’s better than expected for the very first time I’ve attempted to use my dryer without a diffuser and run a brush through my own hair. (Detangling was reserved for a wide tooth comb in the shower with a fist full of conditioner before.) These are probably things only curly girls understand. Anyway, any other time you’ve seen my hair looking straight and smooth or with big, not-frizzy curls, it has been a professional job. And wow, did this give me a new appreciation for what non-curly girls have been going through all these years! I was literally sweating under the heat of the dryer and getting arm cramps. Pulling the frizz out was a ton of work! I’m not going to do a how-to post on how I taught myself, because I’m sure the rest of you would be like, “ummm, we’ve been blow drying our hair since the seventh grade.” But if you’re interested, I followed the directions in this post and tried to imitate what I have seen stylists do.

Unfortunately the weather still can’t decide what it wants to do in DC. We go from chilly to sweating as quickly as the sun can come out around here. I’m ready to put away my bright Lillys and Jack Rogers and dress like fall, so this takes a little creativity. This is one way I’ve attempted to look like it’s October while staying cool when the weather decides to be 85 degrees: a plum dress, suede booties, and a light jacket. Fall colors and textures without the added warmth of sweaters and jeans. Sneaky, sneaky.shopping-with-mom-13

If you hadn’t noticed, half of the stuff in this picture is shopped from my closet of things I’ve had for years. I like to mix in lots of fast fashion for the new seasons and trends, but I also try to intermittently buy classic, high quality things that I know I’ll use forever. Especially when it comes to staples. And in true prep fashion, some of my favorite things are hand-me-downs from Mom and even Grandma. I hope to pass this Speedy along to a daughter or granddaughter someday! shopping-with-mom-6

Aren’t the details on this dropped waist dress scrumptious? I love a vintagy silhouette. Fun fact: I also used to hate maroon and purple on me, until I grew up and realized it absolutely does work on redheads. Now I love it! Gimme all the deep plum hues for fall.

Mom and I had way too much fun doing this little photo shoot when she was in town this weekend. My friend Grace and I used to get all dressed up and take “fashion shoot” photos for fun when we were little, so this is like the grown up version of that. This blogging thing is so much fun!shopping-with-mom-14

I actually really love olive, plum, brown, and a pop of turquoise this time of year. I may have to look for more outfits to put together with these colors…
